What Is Keyword Difficulty?
Keyword difficulty, also referred to as keyword competition, is a metric that determines how challenging it is to rank for a particular keyword in search engine results. The higher the keyword difficulty, the more competitive the keyword, making it harder for new or lower-authority websites to achieve high rankings.
Several factors influence keyword difficulty. One major factor is the authority of competing websites. If well-established domains such as Wikipedia, government sites, or large media organizations dominate the search results for a specific keyword, it will be much harder to outrank them.
Content quality also plays a significant role. If the top-ranking pages for a keyword contain in-depth, valuable, and highly optimized content, search engines will prioritize those pages. To compete, content must provide more value, offer unique insights, or address gaps in existing information.
Backlink profile strength is another critical element. Search engines consider backlinks as votes of confidence, meaning that content with a robust backlink profile will typically rank higher. Keywords that attract content with many high-quality backlinks tend to have higher competition levels.
To measure keyword difficulty, SEO tools like SEMrush, Ahrefs, and Moz assign a difficulty score to keywords. These scores usually range from 0 to 100, with higher numbers indicating greater competition. A keyword with a difficulty score above 70 is considered highly competitive, while keywords with scores under 30 are generally easier to rank for, especially for new websites.
The ideal keyword strategy involves targeting keywords with a balanced difficulty score—low enough to provide ranking opportunities but still high enough to generate meaningful search traffic. Conducting thorough keyword research and identifying low-competition opportunities can significantly improve an SEO campaign’s effectiveness.
